Week 6 (Oct. 13) : Zip it Up! $30

Don’t be intimidated by zippers! Master this important skill to bring your projects to the next level. In this class you will learn:

  • about different types of zippers and when to use them
  • how to baste and sew a centred zipper sample
  • how to sew an exposed zipper into a zippered pouch
  • the names and purposes of other zipper techniques for further independent learning
  • tricks for minor zipper repairs (zipper pull popped off the zip, zipper pull tab broken off)

For this class, all materials will be provided. You will take home a finished zipper pouch and a completed sample of a centred zipper. You will also receive a take-home project sheet to continue practicing on your own.

Sample of belt bag project for Intermediate Projects (week 7)

Week 7 (Oct. 20) Intermediate Project — Intro to Bag Making   $60

Fee includes project materials, including a fabric appropriate in size and quality. NOTE: this class starts at 6:30 pm

  • Learn bag making basics as you make a trendy belt bag using LearnCreateSew’s Flat Fanny Pack pattern
  • Gain skills for future bag projects including: welt zipper, adding bag hardware, “bagging out” a lining and adding a credit card pocket
  • early start (6:30 pm) so everyone can finish in one evening
  • This class is great for confident beginners or experienced sewists wanting to gain bag making skills

Week 8 (Oct. 27) : Community Sew! $5 or pay what you can (pay in class)

 This night is open to all previous students. Bring your own project to work on independently, and get a chance to socialize with other sewists. There is no formal training this week, but teachers will be on hand to answer questions as needed.

Week 9 (Nov. 3) : Sewing Machine Basics $30

This is the place to start! This class is right for you if you have never used a sewing machine, or if it has been a little while and you need a refresher. In this class you will learn the basics of using a machine, and complete a small project to take home.

You will learn:

  • Names and functions of sewing machine parts
  • Filling a bobbin and threading a machine
  • Controlling your speed and sewing straight lines
  • Back tacking, zig-zag stitches and when to use them

For this class, materials will be provided for practice and for your project. Bring your own sewing machine if it is in good working order, or use one of our machines

Week 9 (Nov 10): Hem it Yourself! $30

Tired of paying for your pants to be shortened? Want to give your projects a professional finish with a beautiful hem? After completing this class you will be able to shorten your own clothing, with two different techniques.

You will learn how to:

  • choose the right hem for different garments and fabric types
  • measure and pin pant legs to be hemmed
  • cut, mark and press a garment edge for hemming
  • practice two hem techniques: a fold over machine hem, and a hand-stitched hem

You will take home sample hems and a project sheet with all the hem techniques to continue practicing at home.

Week 10: (Nov. 17 ) Sewing Machine Basics $30

Week 11: (Nov. 24) Community Night/Repair Cafe (Pay What You Can)

This is a drop-in night for all past students. Bring your own small item to repair, and get advice on your mending projects . Experts will be on hand to answer questions and offer guidance but there will be no formal teaching. Sewing machines and irons will be available for student use. If you have no repairs, feel free to bring your own project to work on in our classroom.
